Close to Fort Collins, Colorado is Lory State Park. You should spent some time at Lory State Park and enjoy hiking, picnicking mountain biking, and horseback riding. This all will be possible while experiencing some of the fabulous foothill scenery. From mountainous hillsides to rolling valleys there are 26 miles of awesome trails that rarely exceed a 12 % grade.

The diversity of trails is perfect for mountain bike ride riding, short or long hikes, strolling, horseback riding or trail runs. Back-country camping is also an option for anyone who is searching for a quiet retreat that is close to Fort Collins.

The beautiful trails that are on the east side of this amazing park provide access to many of Horsetooth Reservoir’s coves and bays. Kayakers, canoeists, and rafters will be able to hand-launch their watercraft within a few short steps from the parking lot at North Eltuck Bay. All power boats can be launched at the Horsetooth Dam ramp which is 2 miles away on the Horsetooth Reservoir. Power boats are available for rental at Boyd Lake State Park, which is nearby.

Back-country Camping

There are 6 back-country campsites which are available. During hunting season, you can only camp on Friday and Saturday nights.


‚ÄčLory State Park has over 21 miles of easy to advanced biking trails. You can always check about the conditions on their website.


The Horsetooth Reservoir is east of Lory State Park and it is operated by the Larimer County Department of Natural Resources. Another possibility for power boaters is the Boyd Lake State Park‚Äč which is in the Loveland area. It is only a short drive from Lory.


Lory State Park has access to South Eltuck, Horsetooth Reservoir’s Quarry, and Satanka Coves for fishing. You will need a Colorado State fishing license and a State Park pass. You can obtain hunting & fishing licenses at the Lory State Park visitors center.

Group Picnicking

Lory State Park has 3 group picnic areas. They are all available by reservation. A non-group picnic site is on a first come first serve basis.


With over 26 miles of gorgeous hiking trails in the park, there is something for every level of hiker.


Lory State Park permits hunting from the Tuesday, just after Labor Day, to the Tuesday just prior to Memorial Day. Every hunter must register beforehand at the visitor center or self service station. All other state laws and regulations apply during any hunting trip while in Lory State Park.
